April 26, 2010 ~ What’s keeping WFE Director Francis Lawrence so busy? Read my WFE ~ Big Top post! (dated April 26, 2010)

Edited to add:  More WFE Casting Notifications via waterforelephantsfilm. com fan blog “Casting for Tent Crew Roustabouts… Fox 2000 Pictures is accepting submissions for Special Ability Extras to portray Sledge Gang/Stake Team Roustabouts in the upcoming film, “Water For Elephants”.” Check their blog for the complete details.

April 25, 2010 ~ WFE filming schedule update: Filming is set to begin May 20, 2010, not May 22nd as previously stated.

April 23, 2010 ~ Just a quick WFE recap:
Filming is set to begin May 20, 2010 in Los Angeles, Santa Paula and Fillmore, CA. This major film is being brought to the screen by Flashpoint Entertainment and Fox 2000 Pictures. Academy Award nominee Richard LaGravenese adapted the screenplay from Sara Gruen’s New York Times bestselling novel. Director Francis Lawrence is helming this much anticipated film and he’s brought on board Academy Award nominated Production Designer Jack Fisk, Academy Award nominated Costume Designer Jacqueline West and Cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto. The film stars Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon, Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz and Robert Pattinson in the role of Jacob Jankowski, the story’s protagonist.

April 19, 2010 ~ Jacqueline West has signed on as Costume Designer for Water for Elephants: Jacqueline was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Achievement in Costume Design for her work on the films “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “Quills”. Her designs were also featured in “State of Play”, “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”, “The New World” and “The Tree of Life”, which is in post production. WFE Production Designer Jack Fisk also worked on “The New World” and “The Tree of Life” films. The Water for Elephants film crew is shaping up nicely! Here is a very interesting video interview with Jacqueline! I am very excited about this news, her work was amazing on “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” film. Her costume designs are going to transform Rob, Reese and Christoph  into their characters with early 1930’s authenticity… I’m thrilled!

April 19, 2010 ~ On Saturday, April 17th, the Sande Alessi Casting directors in Los Angeles held an open casting call for film extras for Water for Elephants. One of the contributors over at the waterforelephantsfilm.com blog was able to attend the call and spoke to a couple of the casting directors involved with the production.  Below is an excerpt from their blog giving casting/production details about Water For Elephants.

~Production will last 55 days (considered a short production)

~All filming will take place in Los Angeles and surrounding areas (as we know, Santa Paula & Fillmore are the main locations)

~They’ve seen 1000 people so far for extra work

~They have been casting the following roles: fire eaters, bowling pin jugglers, aerialists, trapeze artists and more

April 17, 2010 ~ WFE Casting drama continues:
As I said on the ~Your choice for 93 year old Jacob~ page yesterday, I suspect that some of the supporting characters have already been cast, such as Old Jacob, Kinko/Walter and Camel. Yesterday I mentioned that the role of Catherine Hale was casting and I also learned that the role of Russ is currently being cast, he’s a character from the modern day circus… Hopefully the WFE Director will release some names soon, until then that’s about it ‘casting news’ wise. More to follow…

April 16, 2010 ~ One of the minor roles in WFE  is currently being cast:
It is the role of Catherine Hale, the girl at the beginning of WFE who Jacob has a crush on. They are fellow students at Cornell University. I will follow up with the actress’ name once it’s announced.

April 13, 2010 ~ More casting news and a filming location added. “Casting for supporting roles and extras is now underway, and filming is set to begin May 22, 2010 in Fillmore and Santa Paula, CA area.” (source)
The casting info also mentions that (of course) they’re looking for real circus acts and sideshow types… Most of this info has already been posted below but the part about the filming location was new, so it was worth mentioning. (*interesting side note: production companies do not cast the films, they hire casting directors to sort through the 1000’s of submissions)

April 12, 2010 ~ Apparently Sande Alessi Casting is advertising an open casting call for Water for Elephants this Saturday April, 17th. Anyone in or around the Los Angeles area might want to check it out. They’re looking for men and women with a strong 1930’s look to play extras in the film.

April 11, 2010 ~ This evening I Tweeted WFE Director FL, @Hibbits, with this question: “Have you cast Kinko (Walter), Camel or any of the other supporting characters?” His reply was: “@WFEfilm we are in the process now. I will update with news as soon as we lock some people in but until then… I have to stay tight lipped” More casting news is forthcoming we’ll just have to sit tight until then…

April 11, 2010 – Here is some casting news for WFE: “WANTED: seasoned ESCAPE ARTIST to be a featured extra throughout a feature film. SAG rate of $175/8. The film is called “Water For Elephants” and stars Reese Witherspoon & Academy Award winning actor Christopher Waltz. The story is centered around a circus in the early 1900s <sic> and filming begins in May just outside of LA. They are also looking for jugglers and fire eaters. In addition to Ms. Witherspoon, Twilight star Robert Pattinson has signed on for the project based upon the best selling book of the same name by Sara Gruen.” (source)

This is from the Sande Alessi Casting website:
“WATER FOR ELEPHANTS: Feature Film starring Robert Pattinson, Christoph Waltz and Reese Witherspoon. 1930s period types all ages. Women with shoulder length hair or shorter and men with short hair or willing to cut. Real circus acts and sideshow types. Stay tuned for more information soon. SAG”

April 5, 2010 – I just learned from WFE director, Francis Lawrence, that Rodrigo Prieto has sign on as Cinematographer for Water for Elephants!

April 2, 2010 – How could I not have realized that when I mentioned yesterday that I tweeted WFE director FL that it would be like “a shot that was heard ’round the world.” Within minutes his twitter account was tweeted all across the Twitter universe and his followers increased 3 fold. Poor guy, he probably doesn’t know what hit him. It’s funny how no one noticed that I mentioned him in my March 19th post *shrug*. Anyway, since everyone is now following FL you probably already know that he confirmed that WFE will not be filming in NY state, but we already knew that. Water for Elephants will be filming in California as was first mentioned more than a week ago.

April 1, 2010 – I tweeted the director asking if there is any WFE news that he could share with us… His response “@WFEfilm nothing new yet. I will definitely update with new and cool stuff.” So this gives us hope that he’ll follow through with some news for us as soon as he has something to share… He seems like he’ll be very forthcoming with updates once production on WFE gets closer to the start of filming mid-May. There are still casting decisions to be made, which I am sure he will share  the choices with us as soon as it’s permitted. So basically unless something ‘leaks’, news-wise, that’s about it for now. Keep checking back!
